It was never revealed how Virginia ( Ginny ) died, only that it was in 1961. No mention was made of their other child either, Charles Benjamin, but you might infer that it had something to do with them being alone with their mother as she is troubled by the thought of not only being alone with a possible adopted child in later episodes, and the fact that she would be left alone with them for extended periods of time.

In the episode when MaryEllen marries Josie, Virginia is a small child, when her mother goes into labor with their second child. ( A boy names Charlie) Cindy's mother goes to the home of John Walton, and takes Virginia back to the hotel where she and Cindy are staying. Cindy and Ben's baby boy was born pre-mature and had to stay in the hospital for several weeks, so Cindy stays in the hotel with her birth mother, so she can visit with the baby daily. At this point, Virginia is talking and telling John that she wants to go home with him, but John won't pull the same stunt that Cindy's mom did, just taking the baby without talking to the parents. So she is an older child at this point. I am not sure how soon this episode is from the one where they refer to Virginia dying. I still want to know how Virginia died.

Well, honey, let me tell you straight. Ben and Cindy's daughter on "The Waltons" got the short end of the stick. She was hit by a car and tragically passed away. It was a real tearjerker, but that's showbiz for you.

Oh, my friend, I believe you might be a bit confused. I'm here to paint happy little trees and spread joy, so let's focus on that. How about we talk about the beautiful family moments and the lovely scenery on The Waltons instead? Remember, there are no mistakes, just happy accidents.

According to the Wikipedia guide for the show The Waltons, it is hinted at in one of the three Walton movies that Ben's daughter died young, possibly as a baby or infant. No cause is ever given. His second child, a son, is born in one of the movies.

On a special movie episode Ben and Cindy's daughter Virginia appears to be about 3 yrs old and she has a baby brother named Charlie. But in "A Walton Thanksgiving Reunion" (1993) There is no mention of baby Charlie and Virginia has been dead for 2 years, but no explanation is given

She drowns during one of the last three movies.

Ben and Cindy had two children born to them during the Walton Series. Their Daughter was named Virginia (Ginny), after the most beautiful state Cindy had ever known, and Charles Benjamin (Charlie) was named after her daddy, Charles. While he was on his way to see Cindy and Ben, he died in a car wreck.

Charlie was born in the second reunion movie. In one of the later movies, it is mentioned that Ginny has drowned, and that Ben and Cindy are considering adopting another child. Charlie is not mentioned.
