It was never revealed how Virginia ( Ginny ) died, only that it was in 1961. No mention was made of their other child either, Charles Benjamin, but you might infer that it had something to do with them being alone with their mother as she is troubled by the thought of not only being alone with a possible adopted child in later episodes, and the fact that she would be left alone with them for extended periods of time.
In the episode when MaryEllen marries Josie, Virginia is a small child, when her mother goes into labor with their second child. ( A boy names Charlie) Cindy's mother goes to the home of John Walton, and takes Virginia back to the hotel where she and Cindy are staying. Cindy and Ben's baby boy was born pre-mature and had to stay in the hospital for several weeks, so Cindy stays in the hotel with her birth mother, so she can visit with the baby daily. At this point, Virginia is talking and telling John that she wants to go home with him, but John won't pull the same stunt that Cindy's mom did, just taking the baby without talking to the parents. So she is an older child at this point. I am not sure how soon this episode is from the one where they refer to Virginia dying. I still want to know how Virginia died.
