What happened to Anastasia?

Anastasia was one of the daughters of Czar Nicholas II, the last Czar of Russia. The royal family was murdered during the Russian Revolution, but when the bodies were found buried in Siberia, two were missing. They were expected to be the bodies of two of the children, Anastasia and Nicholas. This brought up the rumors that two of the children escaped. Several impostures have come out claiming to be Anastasia, but in 2008 scientific research concluded that these impostures revealed no blood line to the royal family. Two bodies were also recovered and with DNA testing they were concluded to be the missing children of Anastasia and Nicholas. This means Anastasia and her brother Nicholas were both murdered on that night along with the rest of the family.

There was a theory that after all the other family members were shot, that one member played dead among the bodies and made her escape some time between the loading into the truck and the burning of the bodies. That was Anastasia Romanova. It was believed that she received help from a sympathetic guard who helped her reach a hospital to receive medical treatment. One woman in particular turned heads when she claimed that she was Anastasia and that she survived due to the kindness of one of the guards. She was Anna Anderson, the most famous case of mistaken identity. She had a history of mental illness, and had convinced herself that she was the missing Grand Duchess. However, when a close friend of the royal family paid her a visit, she sneered and declared the woman an imposter. However, that did not stop Anderson from telling her story. It was the inspiration for the 1956 live action movie "Anastasia" starring Ingrid Bergman, and later an animated rendering staring Meg Ryan as the voice of the orphan Anya. Both however were never intended to be historically accurate, and were meant to be merely fairy-tales. When the Romanov bodies were discovered in the 1990's two important bodies were missing. The heir, Alexei, and the Duchess Anastasia. Attention once again swarmed around Anderson, who loved the limelight. However, not long after, the missing Grand Duchess was found next to her brother in an unmarked grave. The mystery of Anastasia was finally solved. She had died that night along with all of her family. She, along with her family, were eventually made saints in the Russian Orthodox Church and finally laid to rest 80 years after their cruel and gruesome deaths.
