The Twilight series has a mixture of genres: romance, fantasy and action. Genre is often a relative classification. Meaning, that if you are comparing two books because they are Horror novels, you will focus on features typical of a horror novel. If you were comparing one of them to a romance novel, you would focus on the romance features of the book instead. Individual readers may also identify similarities, and create an ad-hoc genre based on their observations.

What might an "ad-hoc" category of genre for Twilight be? Well, in a sense it is a "new vampire" novel, because its vampires are not loners. Their supernatural nature is accepted, and the protagonist is not concerned with hunting and killing them. Actually, she is infatuated with them. This idea could have begun with Anne Rice's vampire novels, which spawned imitators writing for romance-interested audiences.

For younger students, it is useful to focus on key features of major genres. Then, by drawing comparisons to other books, you can elaborate on this classification. However, this will not prepare you for the specificity and subjectivity with which real critics practice genre classification.

Genre is not simple. You may get this impression from walking down the library or bookstore aisles, but those classifications were created by the publishing industry, not by readers. When critics talk about genre, they don't have to be practical at all. You can say "this is a new genre of book," and make a very good case, but bookstores can't set aside a whole aisle for it.

The Greek origin of the word "genre," which is similar to taxonomic "genus," also implies that genre will be a scheme that takes into account similar works or a literary tradition from which the work is descended. Then, you have to infer where did an idea come from, and was the author aware of it, which is not very objective, and can produce all sorts of answers.

Twilight is confusing, because it fits well into the genre of "thrillers," which is a very modern, recent genre. However, thrillers often mix elements of more stable genres and sub-genres in order to stay fresh, and provide surprises. When you consider the heavy romantic overtones, and the presence of vampires, which is usually a feature limited to horror novels, it can get very confusing.

Furthermore, is it a young adult novel, since Meyers intended it for teenagers.

Being able to discuss one book's genre in an advanced way, really requires a broad knowledge of texts and the history of literature. You can expand that on that knowledge almost infinitely. So what you really have, is a "glass bead game" (I am alluding to Herman Hesse's 1949 novel of the same name).

Twilight is considered in the horror, and fantasy genre, generally because of the vampire theme, but personally, and probably to ever one else who has read the books it is just fantasy.
