There is a category for makeup since 1982. There were two nominees that year: Stan Winston for Heartbeeps and the winner: Rick Baker for An American Werewolf in London (1981). Before that certain makeup artists received a special award for their achievement, such as William Tuttle for 7 Faces of Dr. Lao (1964) and John Chambers for Planet of the Apes (1968).
