Legend says the following: In late summer 1999, Ellen discovered she was pregnant with Sebastian's baby. In order not to devastate her lover, Matt, with this news, Ellen skipped town. She moved to New Orleans to be near Sebastian's family. (Sebastian himself had died several months previously.) Matt went into a deep depression and his health declined, beginning with severe coughing spells. One day, Matt discovered his father's business/mafia rival was looking to kill him. Matt left town through the witness protection program and asked the men in the WPP to help him find Ellen.
Matt soon found Ellen and her newborn baby living in New Orleans. Ellen admitted to Matt that this baby was not his child - it was Sebastian's. Matt could not and would not forgive Ellen for her betrayal. Even though months earlier, back in Port Charles, Matt attempted to forgive Ellen for cheating on him, now, he could not see past the fact that Ellen had a baby by Sebastian. Matt turned cold, telling Ellen he no longer wanted anything to do with her. Ellen eventually met someone new, got married and raised her child alongside her new husband in New Orleans.
Matt initially, through the direction of the Witness Protection Program, settled In Hartford Connecticut and was given a new name, "Jonathan". He worked with abused and neglected children in a sanctuary house, but no longer practiced in the medical field, as he did in Port Charles. He continued to be depressed over the situation with Ellen. One day, his life was to change dramatically. Jonathan learned his father had died. As Jonathan's elder brother had been killed earlier, the mafia "kingship" was now passed on to Jonathan himself.
In short order, "Jonathan" took the reigns of his father's mafia empire, and began using his real name, the name given to him at birth, "Eric Mancusi". One aspect of Eric's father's business that had always intrigued and interested him was the elder Mancusi's position of power in Las Vegas. Indeed, several years earlier, "Matt" took Ellen on vacation to Las Vegas. HIs ulterior motive for that trip was precisely to look into his father's business dealings there. Now, with the Mancusi mob syndicate at his command, Eric moved to Las Vegas to run his late father's empire.
Eric never settled down with any particular woman. As one of Las Vegas's most powerful men, he has been "entertained" and found companionship with many beautiful (and younger) women. Eric now realises this is the life he has always wanted, even secretly craved. The power, the women.... He keeps close tabs, always, on the city he once lived for a short while, Port Charles. He has always taken a keen interest in the goings-on within the Corinthos organization, the Jerome organization, the Zacchara organization....
