The poem has a very inspirational tone of pride and self-love for African American women. I think the poem gives homage to past Africa American women who were strong, beautiful, and inspired the latter generation of women. Lorde wrote "When strangers come and compliment me your aged spirit takes a bow". This shows how Lorde gives acknowledgment to the past generation. I think the poem has a lot to do with identity and finding pride and beauty in the African American heritage.
