This is what I remember from my college Philosophy course. I probably mixed up some information so double check it.
Rousseau started the Humanist movement. The idea that the individual should be most valued. Rousseau believed that the Golden Age of Man was about 15,000 years ago, when Man had an abundance of food, freedom to live in the wild, have sex with lots of people, (to continue the species) and the ability to make fire. Therefore, Society has not enhanced our species, but has been its downfall.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau was famous for being a philosopher in a time when France( where he was from if the name did not state this) was primarily Catholic in religion.
