William Becknell was a merchant who, in 1821, loaded a wagon train with merchandise and blazed a trail westward from Missouri to Santa Fe, which is now in New Mexico. When he reached Santa Fe, he made huge profits trading the merchandise for furs, livestock, and silver. When other merchants heard of his success, they followed his example and went westward as well.
