Actually, Edward never does say "say it out loud" in the book. The movie director added it in so that the people who haven't read twilight can understand the movie better.

Bella: "You're impossibly fast. And strong. Your skin is...pale white, and ice cold. Your eyes change color...and sometimes you speak like - like you're from a different time. You never eat or drink anything, you don't go into the sunlight. How old are you?" Edward: "Seventeen." Bella: "How long have you been seventeen?" Edward: "... a while." Bella: "I know what you are." Edward: "Say it...out loud. Say it." Bella: "Vampire." Edward: "Are you afraid?" Bella: "No."
yes very loud!!
babies can be really loud and I'm not kidding
It is so loud, sometimes it can break the membrain in your ear and make them bleed.
They needed the thunder as when they were playing they would hit the ball so loud it would make a really big bang and without the thunder humans could have heard it from miles and miles away! Hope that answers your question. The Cullens need the thunder to cover up the noise they make while playing baseball. They are all so incredibly strong that when they hit the ball it makes a sound as loud as thunder.
