The two main lead roles are Harold Hill (a fraud who tries to squeeze money out of people by making them believe he can lead a band) and Marian Paroo (a stuck-up music teacher who is the first to find out Harold is a crook). They fall in love, making a romantic interest in the play. Other lead (but not so important) roles are Mayor Shinn, Eulalie McKecknie Shinn, Mrs. Paroo, Winthrop Paroo, the Quartet, the Pick-a-Little Ladies, Zaneeta Shinn, Tommy Djilas, and Marcellus Washburn.

The phrase has since become a popular meme and is often used humorously to emphasize the importance of settling debts or acknowledging someone's skills or accomplishments.
