Transistor radios are much smaller, lighter, and cheaper than radios with comparable sensitivity and selectivity that were previously available. Also, they use far less power, derived in portable operation from batteries that are much smaller, lighter, and cheaper.

Before the invention of the semiconductor transistor radios used thermionic valves (or tubes if you are in the US) to provide the amplification circuitry. The transistor radio therefore replaced the valve (or tube) radio.

The transistor was invented in 1948 . . . small radios made with transistors came out in the mid-1950s. The "Golden Age" of pocket-sized transistor radios was 1958-1968.
