term used for music dependent on its structure alone for comprehension. It is the antithesis of program music. It is not associated with extra musical ideas or with a pictorial or narrative scheme of emotions, nor does it attempt to reproduce sounds in nature. Hence it is always instrumental, although not all instrumental music is absolute. Bach's Art of Fugue is an example of absolute music.

Absolute Music is the theory in which the music exists in its own space, free from the restrictions of time, place and culture, and is therefore a universal language. A similar line of thought is presented in the concept of absolute pitch in which things like culture don't affect how music sounds. Absolute Music is an idea central to the practice of Nationalism, where the arts are intended to reflect and reinforce the culture, history and traditions of a nation.
