Each of The Beatles was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) on June 12, 1965, for import revenues generated by their record sales.

John Lennon returned his MBE medal on November 25, 1969, as a protest against Britain's support of Nigeria against Biafra, their support of America in the Vietnam War, and "against 'Cold Turkey' (his latest single) slipping down the charts".

The Beatles played for the Royal Family, including the Queen Mother, but never actually played for the Queen in person.

At the Royal Variety Command Performance, Queen Elizabeth missed the show because of her late-term pregnancy (with the future Prince Andrew). When the Beatles were awarded MBEs in 1965, they followed all the royal protocols in meeting the Queen, but these didn't include playing music.

When the Beatles started Apple Records in 1968, they had box sets of the first four singles issued by the label delivered to the Queen, and other members of the Royal Family. Announcements came out later that the Queen and other Royals enjoyed the records.

The Beatles were awarded the MBE for export revenues; the money earned by sales of their records around the world helped the British economy. Future Prime Minister Harold Wilson prompted the award, which helped his public image in Britain, especially with young voters. (The award was NOT for "services to music", despite later stories to the contrary.)
