The weather can be unpredictable - you can sometimes see what you would expect to characterise all 4 seasons in one day. People have said if you can cope with the weather in the north east anywhere else should cause you no trouble at all.
It can get a bit rowdy, especially round The Gate area and the Bigg Market at night, even more so with stag / hen parties on the weekend. Unless that's the kind of occasion you're going for I'd try and avoid those areas around those times. In the week the atmosphere is a bit more relaxed.
The parking attendants are relentless. Don't park anywhere that you think you shouldn't or overstay your ticket, the likelihood is you won't get away with it. Getting a parking ticket can really ruin your day!
Although its not a problem for me, some people complain there is a limited variety of shops in the city centre. They are expanding the city centre and recently opened a new area of Eldon Square. Having said this, if you want something that isn't there, check the Metrocentre which is about 5 miles away in Gateshead (you can get the train from Central Station directly there for about £1.60).
Aside from this I can't really answer more specifically. There are areas on the perimeter of the city with good and bad points. I suppose it depends what you are looking for.
Please don't let any of these bad points put you off Newcastle, however. I have lived there for 5 years and I think it is without a doubt one of the best cities in the country. It is full of character with good shopping, famous nightlife and lots of green and grassy areas.
