When you say top D, I'm not sure if you mean the D right above the "tuning note" C or the one above that. For the one directly above the tuning note C, the fingering is the 1st valve. For the D an octave above that, the fingering I use to make it easiest to play and most in tune is either just the 1st valve or often completely open, without any valves pressed down.
