Who is Gloria Lutie Smith?

Gloria Lutie Bleich Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska; she was the daughter of Fred and Lutie Bleich. Her older brother was my father, Richard Herbert Bleich. My understanding is she took some art classes at University of Omaha. I am not a fan, but do have a pink floral with my uncle Smitty's textured frame. My daughter Ann has a Raggedy Ann and Andy done by Gloria's mother Lutie Bleich.

Derivation of name Churchill Downs?

In 1875, the Louisville Jockey Club and Driving Association opened. Although the new racetrack was run by Lutie Clark, and had been originally envisioned by him, it was financially supported by Henry and John Churchill. Clark was not a well-liked man, and locals began to derisively refer to the racetrack as "Churchill's downs," as a way to poke fun at Clark and remind him who was really in charge of the track. In 1883, the press began to use the name, and Churchill Downs is probably the most famous racetrack in the United States today.

How did churchill downs get its name?

I actually answered this in an essay I wrote on racing: "In 1875, the Louisville Jockey Club and Driving Association opened. In 1883, the press began to use the name, and Churchill Downs is probably the most famous racetrack in the United States today."
