When Tarzan was one year old, his mother died of natural causes, and his father was killed by Kerchak, leader of the ape tribe into which Tarzan was adopted.
Tarzan felt the need to set himself apart from his ape family; he knew he was not an ape. He knew that he was a man. To remind himself of his "manliness," he rid himself of facial hair. To Tarzan, facial hair was a characteristic of an ape.
