The four houses that students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are sorted into are:
Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin
Gryffindor's colour is red and is symbolised by the lion. Gryffindors are considered brave. Hufflepuff's colour is yellow and is symbolised by the badger. Hufflepuffs are considered hard working and loyal, but perhaps not the brightest. Ravenclaw is the house for the clever students, is of the colour blue and is symbolised by the eagle. Slytherin is a house for those of shadowy ambition who will do whatever it takes to get where they want to be. Slytherin is symbolised by the snake and has the colour green. The houses are perhaps metaphors for the personalities of the characters in the books. For example, brave Harry Potter is in Gryffindor, whereas ruthless Tom Riddle Jnr aka Lord Voldemort was in Slytherin when he was in school.
