When the quarter note (pulse) is divided evenly in two parts, each half is a straight eighth note. The term "straight eights" is used in opposition to "swung eighths" used in swing jazz. "Straight eighths" really means "eighth notes" period.

It's the opposite of swung or swinging 8ths, also known as even 8ths. I.e. any eighth note equals any other. So it's simply how you would play 8th notes if you hadn't heard of swing.
