Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904-1991) was a Polish-born American author and one of the leading figures in the Yiddish literary movement. He moved from Poland to the United States in 1935.
"Utz" is a story by Isaac Bashevis Singer about a wealthy and eccentric Jewish man who decides to leave his fortune to the city of New York when he dies. He believes that his money is a burden and that cities have souls. After his death, his niece and nephew fight over his inheritance, but ultimately the money goes to the city as per his wishes.
