I suppose the answer really depends on where you live. I recently visited my friend in Germany and was astonished to hear about the things that go on at a school by the name of St. George´s. I was further shocked to find private schools in Germany are often of lower quality than State Schools due to their lack of regulation. I was told St. George´s was being investigated and had several pending legal matters, so it may be one of those to stay clear of.
I dont believe Golding mentions it in the book. However, reasoning and my own experience can conclude that they may have attended a private school, as it is a single-sex group who landed on the island: most private schools are only single-sex.
