Batman:
This is a great question. No really it is. I recently got into comic books two years ago. I'm happy you included Robin! = ) He's my favorite character! But SOME people made him *cough* new DC writers *cough*. made him in to Nightwing. OK sorry about that just HAD to say that OK now the question!
Well lets start with Batman (also known as Bruce Wayne). Bruce's parents were killed when he was eight. RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM!! They were killed by Joker (before he became Joker - another story.) As you can imagine this created a large amount of emotional trauma. This created a yearning - a thirst if you will. to FIGHT THE CRIMINAL UNDERWORLD! He trained and trained along side his guardian at the time Alfred Pennyworth (He's the butler - again another story.) He wanted something - a symbol. something that would strike fear into the hearts of criminals. and, you guessed it! He became BATMAN! Now this is where MY favorite person comes in, the "Boy Wonder" Robin! (also known as Dick Grayson. There are other robins, five to be exact including the original. yet AGAIN another story.) One day Bruce Wayne (Batman just making sure you remember) attended the Haly circus. where a group known as the flying Graysons performed - a family of three: a mother, a father, and a son named Dick Grayson. Gee I wonder who he is! *cough*Robin *cough*. (not yet though). Though no one knew that before the performance, Tony Zucco (remember him) came earlier asking for "protection" money, which is a nice, nice way of saying "Give us money or you'll get hurt." (nice isn't it.) So anyway the Graysons refused to pay. That night as Dick Grayson"s parents got onto the high wires. they collapsed. and well, uh, they kinda, well, um, sorta, died. Yep D-I-E-D. Dick did not get injured though he was heart broken. He was a complete wreck. Then after that he was sent to a Catholic orphanage called St. Jude. There a sister (nun) named Elizabeth Mary cared for him until a man, the same man who went to the circus that night, Bruce Wayne adopted him. Not as his son but as his ward. Dick went. He spent a good time until one day Dick Grayson found the bat cave. (Batman's headquarters). He wanted to help. He wanted to bring his killer to justice which was the evil cruel TONY ZUCCO! (Told you to remember him.) Batman said no. He knew Dick was filled with rage. He knew that all he ever wanted to do was kill the killer who killed HIS parents. He couldn't let the boy follow the same path as he did. Almost sending him into the highway to heck. (I dont like to curse). Dick did NOT listen. He put on mask and wore his trapeze costume, saving Batman, and helping him bring in Zucco. He called himself robin (a nick name his mother called him before she passed.)
A moment of silence please.
Okay back to the question. so BA-BAM! Dick Grayson's Robin! He had a good run. I say this because, well, here comes those um's again, Batman, well, uh, he uhhhh, okay this is hard - fired his Robin. For the people who never ever read Batman, saw it, heard of it. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY TRUE! He fired him. He had a nice reason to I guess. He fired him after he was shot by the Joker. In his right shoulder. (no he's not, i repeat, NOT dead.) By this time Robin was beginning to rebel. He had his own ideas when it came to crime-fighting. Deep down, way deep down, Batman really does care for Robin. No really. So he fired his partner because he didn't want him to be hurt. This is where DICK GRAYSON'S career as Robin ends. There have been other ones as I mentioned earlier. So there you go - there's the story. Oh, one more thing, Robin ended up becoming Nightwing, then batman. READ BATTLE FOR THE COWL! He also married Batgirl Barbra Gorden. Again - another story. So that's it at least for Dick Grayson. HINT HINT
After Dick Grayson quit being Robin and became Nightwing, a new version of the character, Jason Todd, was introduced in Batman #357 (1983). The new character made regular appearances in Batman related comic books until 1988, when the character was murdered by the Joker in A Death in the Family(1989). apparently Batman had some justification for "firing" Dick Grayson to protect him. Eventually he is resurrected and becomes the Red Hood and Red Robin - sometimes villain, sometimes crime-fighter, who has no problem using lethal force in his battles.
The next Robin was Tim Drake, who was training to become Batman's sidekick. He eventually spun off to have his own comic book in about 1991 and become a superhero crime-fighter independent of Batman. After the forced retirement of Tim Drake (by his father) as Robin, Drake's on-and-off girlfriend, Stephanie Brownbecame the fourth Robin and the first in-continuity female version of the character. However, she didn't last long as Robin. Batman fires her after a few missions because he doesn't feel she is proper crime-fighting material and she disobeys his orders. Soon after she is apparently killed by the supervillain Black Mask. She later became the sixth Batgirl (some accomplishment - both the fourth Robin AND the sixth Batgirl). Following Stephanie's apparent death, Tim Drake decided to resume his role as Robin and continued until the events of "Batman R.I.P" and "Final Crisis" where he gives up being Robin to go search for the missing Bruce Wayne.
In "Battle for the Cowl" Dick Grayson, as Nightwing, battles the second (resurrected) Robin, Jason Todd after Bruce Wayne disappears. After defeating Todd, Dick Grayson, the original Robin, takes on the role as Batman with Damian Wayne as the new (5th) Robin.
Bruce Wayne later returned to his role as Batman but decided to focus on worldwide crime fighting, leaving the role of Gotham City Batman to Grayson.
In fact, there were 5.
The first was named Dick Grayson, who appeared in the 1940 comic. This lasted until the 1980s, when his character became his own hero, Nightwing.
The second was Jason Todd, who was Robin until 1983. This incarnation was killed by the Joker in 1989.
Tim Drake was the name of the third Robin. He lasted from 1991 to 2009, and again became his own hero.
The fourth Robin was a woman: Stephanie Brown. She faked her death to become Batgirl, but is now written out of the series.
The last Robin was Damian Wayne, Bruce Wayne's son, but in 2013 he was killed off. He has yet to be replaced in a mainstream Batman comic.
