Originally every human could only afford to hunt and gather to bring to his family the basic necessities to survive, but farther on with the domestication of animal's and the discovery of easy to grow food such as wheat and barley, smaller numbers of people required to grow enough food to sustain a population, this is turn frees a section of the population to do other things such as create tools to further increase production, or create designs to help with distribution of food; these people became the specialists.

Overall it means when you have a rich enough culture that not everyone needs to work to survive you slowly begin to get specialists and advanced researchers.
