Older, though the exact number of years is not given in the book.In Appendix A of The Lord of the Rings, in the section titled "The House of Eorl: The Third Line," we learn this:"Thus it came about that he [Eomund, father of Eomer and Eowyn, and husband of Theodwyn, Theoden's sister] was slain in 3002; for he pursued a small band to the borders of the Emyn Muil, and was there surprised by a strong force that lay in wait in the rocks. Not long after, Theodwyn took sick and died to the great grief of the king....He [Theoden] had only one child of his own, Theodred his son, then twenty-four years old; for the queen Elfhild had died in childbirth, and Theoden did not wed again."Earlier in this passage, we learn that Eomer was born in 2991 T.A., or about eleven years before Theodwyn's death, depending on how long "shortly after is." As Theodred was twenty-four in 3002-3, and Eomer was eleven to twelve years old, the conclusion is reached that Theodred was about 11-12 years older than Eomer.

There has been much discussion on this topic. Since the name, Gandalf, comes from Westron the language of the Northern Men who originally called him a wand-elf, the name should be represented in Old Norse, so it should probably be pronounced Gahndahlv. But that answer should not be set in stone. Mithrandir is his Sindarin name.On the other hand, other words ending with 'f' may not be pronounced as a 'v' because they may have a different origin. For instance, the word Nindalf, the Sindarin name of a fen or swamp near the Emyn Muil, is called Wetwang in Westron, the language of the Northern men, so it probably should be pronounced Nindalf. This is also related to the whole discussion of the plural of the words: elf, self, shelf, wolf, and dwarf. Why do we say (in the plural): elves, selves, shelves, wolves, and dwarfs? Tolkien argued that the last word in that list should be dwarves. In case you are wondering, dwarf does end in an 'f', but the word is English. The Westron word for dwarf is narag, which does not end in an 'f', so it should probably be pronounced dwarf. For the same reason, elf, self shelf, and wolf should probably be pronounced with an ending 'f' sound also.
