HAPPY DAYS! spin-offs; Laverne & Shirley, Blansky's Beauties, Mork & Mindy, Out of the Blue, and Joanie Loves Chachi. There are two animated series. One was produced by Hanna-Barbera entitled The Fonz and the Happy Days Gang which ran from 1980-1982. There are also animated spin-offs of Laverne & Shirley and Mork and Mindy. Another is The Mork & Mindy/Laverne & Shirley/Fonz Hour (1982).[

Also known as third generation spin-offs. A show that is a spin-off of a show that itself is a spin-off.

  • NCIS: Los Angeles is a spin-off of NCIS which is itself a spin-off of JAG.
  • Models Inc was a spin-off of Melrose Place which was a spin-off of Beverly Hills 90210.
  • Laverne & Shirley was a spin-off of Happy Days which was a spin-off of Love American Style.
  • Mork & Mindy was a spin-off of Happy Days which was a spin-off of Love American Style.
  • Joanie Loves Chachi was a spin-off of Happy Days which was a spin-off of Love American Style
  • Good Times was a spin-off of Maude which was a spin-off of All in the Family.
  • Checking In was a spin-off of The Jeffersons which was a spin-off of All in the Family.
  • Victor & Hugo was a spin-off of Count Duckula which was a spin-off of Danger Mouse.
  • Emergency! was a spin-off of Adam-12 which was a spin-off of Dragnet.
  • Gomer Pyle USMC was a spin-off of The Andy Griffith Show which was a spin-off of Make Room for Daddy.
  • Mayberry RFD was a spin-off of The Andy Griffith Show which was a spin-off of Make Room for Daddy.
  • Gloria was a spin-off of Archie Bunker's Place which was a spin-off of All in the Family.
  • Pinky, Elmyra & the Brain was a spin-off of Pinky & the Brain which was a spin-off of Animaniacs.
  • Lobo was a spin-off of The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo which was a spin-off of BJ & the Bear.
  • HolbyBlue was a spin-off of Holby City which was a spin-off of Causalty.
  • Carlton Your Doorman was a spin-off of Rhodawhich was a spin-off of The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

There are even some instances (according to the internet) of more than three generations of spin-offs.

For example ...

  • Evil Con Carne was spun-off from The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy was spun-off from Grim & Evilwhich spun-off from The What a Cartoon Show.
  • Bret Maverick was spun-off from Young Maverickwhich spun-off from Maverick which spun-off from Conflict.
  • Surfside 6 was spun-off from Hawaiian Eye which spun-off from Bourbon Street Beat which spun-off from 77 Sunset Strip which spun-off from the Conflict.

Some iffy ones (to name three) could be the different Transformers shows or the various Super Friends shows, even the three different He-Man cartoon series.

Iffy because there's little or no continuity between each series, they are simply individually produced series that just happen to feature the same characters, but could be considered spin-offs because they do have the same characters and with the examples of the Super Friends & some of the Transformers series, the same voice actors.

This used to be an easy one. For years, NBC's "Frasier," which starred Kelsey Grammer as the character he made famous on "Cheers," was the most successful TV spinoff of all-time. "Frasier" ran for 11 seasons, won numerous Emmy Awards and was among prime-time's Top 10 most popular series for four of those seasons.

Lately, though, the spinoff crown goes to CBS' "NCIS," which stars Mark Harmon as Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, a character he originated on "JAG." Now in its 11th season, "NCIS" has been among the top 10 most popular series for five straight seasons. It's still going strong as CBS' most-watched scripted series and also has spawned its own hit spinoff, "NCIS: Los Angeles."

Can spin-offs be connected to main series?

It depends. Usually, they can, but some spin-offs are made WITH the Main's ideas and world, but on a completely different 'strand'. Sometimes the creators may decide to link them later, otherwise, I'd guess it's safe to assume that they usually are. A prime example of a successful one was the sitcom Rhoda. Rhoda was a character in the Mary Tyler Moore Show.
