Sadly, the FAMOUS FLAMES , the singing group with which JAMES BROWN first began his career, are all now deceased. JAMES BROWN, the group's lead singer, died in December of 2006. BOBBY BYRD, the group's founder, (and the man who discovered James Brown), died 9 months after Brown, in September of 2007 of cancer. LLOYD STALLWORTH , the youngest member, better known as "BABY LLOYD, died of diabetes in 2002. JOHNNY TERRY, another original member, died in 2005. The last surviving member of The Famous Flames, BOBBY BENNETT, was the only member still alive when the group was FINALLY inducted into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME ...some 26 years AFTER lead singer JAMES BROWN'S controversial SOLO induction back in 1986. Bennett, accepted the group's induction in Cleveland in April 2012, before he too, succumbed to diabetes less than a year later, on January 18, 2013. For decades, people had forgotten The Famous Flames, and music writers had falsely and incorrectly stated that The Flames were James Brown's BAND were , and are , INCORRECT. The Famous Flames were a VOCAL GROUP...a fact verified by the 2009 release of the landmark 1964 concert film, The T.A.M.I. Show to DVD. ..a concert in which JAMES BROWN & THE FAMOUS FLAMES stole the show...upstaging THE ROLLING STONES. Shortly before his death, BOBBY BENNETT, the last surviving FAMOUS FLAME, stated in an interview : "I want (people) to know one thing," replied Bennett. "We were the Famous Flames… James Brown was a Famous Flame, Bobby Byrd was a Famous Flame, Lloyd Stallworth was a Famous Flame and Bobby Bennett was a Famous Flame…wherever we played, we were the Famous Flames. We were NEVER THE BAND, NEVER !! We were the 3 guys who danced (and sang) with him and the 3 guys who performed with him at every concert. WE WERE NOT NO "BAND" . MUSICIANS such as MACEO PARKER, FRED WESLEY, JABO STARKS, ST. CLAIR PINCKNEY, BOOTSY COLLINS, CLYDE STUBBLEFIELD,and other James Brown Band members WERE NOT The Famous Flames. The FAMOUS FLAMES: (Left to Right): BOBBY BENNETT, "BABY LLOYD" STALLWORTH, BOBBY BYRD, and JAMES BROWN.
