Yes, there was a "Hotel California", which, inspired Don Henley, to write this song. . It is in the City of Norco, California. This hotel known as "Hotel California", was converted in to a State Prison, known as the, California Rehabilitation Center (CRC) State Prison. This prison really exists and if, you look into the history of the land where this prison is located you will also find, that, there was a hotel which was once on the same land.
The song was not inspired by a Hotel at all. It was inspired by a building in San Francisco which is owned by Anton Szander LeVay. This buiding is the headquarters of the Church of Satan and Anton Szander LeVay is the head of the Church of Satan.....check out their website for more info.
