While it's possible, George Lucas claims Darth Vader was inspired by the samaurai warriors of feudal Japan. He added the breathing apparatus so Darth Vader would be able to breathe between air locks. The result was a robotic-looking warrior that eventually came to look like the Vader we know from the movies.
