He did drink however not as much as he acted. he had a drunk act. frequently on stage he had Apple Juice and pretended it was Bourbon. Dino once said in an interview towards the end of his life that if he drank like his on-stage persona did "do you think I would have a successful as I am if I drank like that." True he loved his booze, as most of the stars of the day but not as much as they say he did. Sinatra, Davis also.
