the pebel signififies marthas truest feelings
Besides all of the standard supplies and weapons, Mitchell Sanders carried brass knuckles, starched tiger fatigues, condoms, a yo-yo, lice, some small stones, and the PRC-25 Radio (he was the RTO). In his heart and mind he carried fear, grief, terror, love, longing, and an obsession with finding the truth and moral in any given situation.
He dies in the chapter "how to tell a true war story". He dies from stepping on a landmine while playing a game of 'catch the grenade' with his friend Rat Kiley. O'Brien tells his death four different times in this chapter.

In "The Things They Carried," each character carries physical and emotional burdens that represent their past and present experiences in the Vietnam War. Some defining objects include Lt. Cross's letters from Martha, Kiowa's Bible, Rat Kiley's medical kit, Ted Lavender's tranquilizers, and Norman Bowker's thumb of his deceased friend Kiowa. Each object serves as a symbol of the weight of their memories, fears, and responsibilities during the war.
