1974 starring Robert Shaw, Walter Matthau, Martin Balsam, Hector Elizondo, James Broderick, Earl Hindman (Wilson from Home Improvement!), Jerry Stiller and Doris Roberts. A gang holds 17 passengers on a train hostage for one million dollars. Great pacing keeps everything moving nicely.

Pelham 123 is based on a remake of the 1974 film "Taking of Pelham One Two Three". Pelham is the name of the train and the 123 or One Two Three is the time it left the station 1:23. It's a call sign given to the train so the conductors can track it.

One of my favorite movies. The original 1974 cast included:

Walter Matthau

Martin Balsam

Earl Hindman

Dick O'Neill

Tom Pedi

Jerry Stiller

Robert Shaw

Hector Elizondo

James Broderick

There was a made for TV version in 1998 with James Edward Olmos and Vincent D'Onofrio among others. I did not see that one. The newest version has some heavyweight actors but the promos stress special effects not the human drama of the original. I'll be interested to see how it holds up.

The movie "The Taking of Pelham 123" was released in June of 2009. It is a thriller which stars John Travolta and Denzel Washington. It did well at the box office and is still selling well on DVD.
