Stage Makeup is very simple to apply. If you have applied an sort of makeup on yourself, it is basically the same thing- just a lot more of it.

1)BASE. Find a base makeup shade that matches your skin tone as closely as possible. I suggest using Ben Nye products- they run about $16 for a basic kit. If it is oil based, you can take a makeup triangle sponge and apply it directly to a CLEAN face (also, take a look into getting some sort of acne topical treatment if you are prone to breakouts- trust me, you will break out if you don't wash your face after a show). Use this very liberally all over your face, and be sure to get your neck and chin as well up until the neckline of your costume, because it can be seen if you didn't from the audience's perspective. If pancake base (this is usually rock solid looking and you won't be able to get any makeup on a sponge if it is a dry sponge), get some warm water and make sure the triangle sponge is fully soaked through and do the same as for the oil based one.

2) CHEEKS. You don't want to look like a ghost, so get some blush (a dry one you can find at the cosmetic section will do- go cheap, it's not worth it to buy an expensive one) and a blush brush. Smile in the mirror, this will make it easy for you to find the apples of your cheeks, and apply the blush on the apples of your cheeks or the most round part of your cheeks when you smile. Do a figure 3 on both sides of your face starting at the center of your forehead and taking it down to the jawline. Focus mostly on the cheeks, though and remember, when you feel like you put enough to go walking down the street with, apply two more strokes of blush. You want the audience to be able to see it (though not clownish- unless you are playing a clown).

3) EYES. Guys seem to have the most trouble with this, when it is really very simple. Take an eyeliner (black or brown- i suggest brown, unless you have dark features, then i would say black) and close one of your eyes. To do the top of the eye, take the skin of the eye that is closed and pull it away from your nose and draw a line of the eyeliner at the base of your eyelashes. Go all the way from the inside corner to the outside corner. Repeat for the other. For the bottom, pull the skin taught again away from the nose and start at the inside corner and work your way to the outside of the eye.

4) LIPS. Choose a color that accents your lips but doesn't make you look clownish. A good rule of thumb is to go two shades darker than your normal lip color. Apply with a small lip brush.

5) FINISH. Find a loose powder and apply with a big brush all over the area that you have put makeup on. This is so the makeup does not rub off all over your costume and then you have a big dry cleaning bill. Use a finishing spray to set your face and hold the powder in place.

then you are done! break a leg!
