Yes he was. He had just found out that the beast lives within and was going to tell all the boys. But the boys were having a feast and partying. When he comes out of the jungle, the boys think he is the beast and stab him to death, everyone takes part. The next day everyone realizes it is Simon; yet no one will admit it was. :)
He got killed because Jack's tribe was having a feast and got caught up in the excitement of chanting and dancing around the fire. Simon just happened to crawl out of the forest at the same time and believing he was the beast the boys attacked and killed him.
Simon dies because the boys mistaken that simon is the beast. They thought Simon was the beast because it was lightning and dark, they coukdnt see very well. The boys chant "Kill the Beast! Cut his throat! Let him in!" and they spear simon. They tear and bruise and kill Simon little by little. Simon falls off the cliff and floats onto the see. Then suddenly the storm ends, everyone sees that it was not the beast they were killing. It was Simon.....
