There are different types of librarians, so the tasks performed by a librarian can vary significantly. Some of the things that a librarian does may include:

  • Helping library users find the specific items that they want
  • Helping library users to narrow down what they are looking for
  • Showing library users how to find the information they want
  • Teaching library users how to use the catalogue, how to find books, how to use the computers, how to access and use the internet and databases, how to find reliable information, etc. This may be one-on-one or as part of a free instructional session.
  • Retrieving items that are within closed stacks when they are requested by a user.
  • Checking out books, issuing library cards, and accepting payment for fines.
  • Directing library users to where the bathroom is (seriously - this is a common question!)
  • Cataloguing and processing new acquisitions
  • Developing the collection
  • Weeding the collection
  • Ordering new items for the collection
  • Managing and supervising lower-ranking staff
  • Offering reader advisory services (i.e. helping library users to find a good book to read).
  • Designing library spaces (both the physical library and the library's website).
  • Developing library programs.
  • Providing community outreach services (including, but not limited to, educating users about what the library offers, providing services for those who are unable to visit the library due to illness or disability, and visiting schools to introduce students to library).
  • Doing academic research on a range of topics.
  • Assisting academics and scholars in the research process, often by performing extensive literature research and compiling summaries.
  • Providing liaison services (usually within an academic library).
