The book ends in a cliffhanger when the house explodes and Ali's body is not found.

The long version:

Alison has a twin sister named Courtney. Courtney has a history of pretending to be Ali since she has a mental issue, and she stays at a hospital which is why we never hear of Courtney. So one day (the day the girls try to steal Ali's flag), Courtney is home because she is switching hospitals, and Ali is up in her room. Courtney comes and befriends Aria, Spencer, Emily and Hanna while Alison is in the house. Mrs. Dilaurentis mistakes Ali for Courtney and takes her to the hospital. When Ali tries to tell her mom she is Ali, her mom thinks it's just Courtney pretending to be Ali again. So, Ali then spends some time in the preserve that Hanna stays at in the series which is how Iris knows Ali who she thinks is Courtney. So, this whole time Courtney is friends with the 4 girls who they think is Alison but it's not.

Then at their sleepover, Courtney who is really Ali comes back from the hospital for summer. She is jealous of Courtney's life and how Courtney took it from her. Meanwhile, Courtney (as Ali) is with the girls having their 7th grade sleepover. When Courtney (as Ali) tries to hypnotize them, Spencer gets mad and orders Courtney (as Ali) to get out. Courtney goes outside to meet up with Ian after that, but in the act, Alison (as Courtney) takes her and pushes her in the hole, killing her. Btw, Alison was the one who was stalking them in the window during the sleepover.

Then, when Courtney (who everyone thought was Ali) doesn't return, the family and her friends thinks Alison is missing, but really the REAL Alison who was never friends with the 4 girls as they thought, is still at the preserve. Then in Wanted, Alison (as Courtney) returns and the girls believe all her lies as she tells them she is Alison (who they never really knew...they knew Courtney). Then Alison tells her story acting as if she was their best friend.

On their trip with Alison (acting as their old best friend who was Courtney but they thought she was Alison), Ali tries to kill the 4 girls because she is mad Courtney chose them as her bffs (they were losers). The real Alison also killed Jenna and Ian because she was afraid they would spill her secret. Ali is also the new A and she got all of their secrets just like Mona did, from Courtney (acting as Ali)'s journal.

So... really the girls never knew Ali. They knew her twin, Courtney who they thought was Ali, but Courtney (as Ali) died and the real Alison killed her. Really, just think of Ali as Courtney and Courtney as Ali.

Ok well when the girls find out that A is Mona and Mona's gone the girls think everything will go back to normal. WRONG! A comes back and this time A is Alison. You see Alison never died. It was her twin sister Courtney that died. When the girl met Ali that summer it wasn't Alison. It was her twin sister Courtney pretending to be her while Ali was taking her place at Courtney's mental hospital. So Ali comes back as A. Then Ali gets them all to come to her summer house and locks them in a closet. The girls find that Melissa and Ian were there to. Ian was dead. Ali then send them a text message saying the the Ali they knew was Courtney. The girls find a secret passage and find Ali about to escape but Emily pulls her back in they escape with Ali back inside. That's when the house explodes. The girls tell the police EVERYTHING but when the fireman go to the house they only find Ian's body. Alison's body is no where to be found.

To start off with, Ali has a twin (Crazy) sister named Courtney. At the end of the series, we learn that Courtney was pretending to be Ali the entire time, while Ali was in the looney bin, because everyone thought she was actually Courtney. Then, she gets out, & Courtney, whose acting like Ali does the whole hypnotizing bit, & when she ran away, Ali, whose being potrayed as Courtney kills her twin, who is actually Courtney. Then, she kills pretty much everyone in on it, Ie, Ian. & I think Mona dies too... Idr. But, the real Ali tries to kill the main four in a fire, because she hates them for ruining her life along with her now dead twin, Courtney. So, the real Ali is a bit crazy now too. Oh, & Ali really IS a. Courtney wrote a diary with EVERYTHING in it, & Ali & Mona found it, & know everything! Which is why I think Mona ends up dead too, but, as I said, I don't remember.

• Mona does die, but Spencer caused it. Mona tried to kill Spencer, but Spencer fought back, and pushed Mona, causing her death.

well it is not the end since the show will continue onto another season, but what happens in the very end is that Tobi comes back and proves to Emily he is did not kill ali, but later he is caught by the cops for her murder meanwhile Spencer and Emily are at mona's camping birthday in the woods on a scavenger hunt to find out who A is. They find a tree with the names alison and ian in a heart carved into it. They think ian who Spencer used to date and who is curently dating her sister is the older boy who alison was dating and who might have killed her. Meanwhile since hanna was not invited to mona's bday she is spying in the woods. she sees aria and mr. fitz kissing in his car as well as someone who writes i can see you -A on the back of the car. she texts the others and says she knows who A is and to meet at the parking lot. they all meet up but before hanna can spill a car crashes into her and she is not breathing. everyone is freaking out and they all get a text saying she knew to much -A The last clip is a followup on the video of alison in the woods the night she died, she turns the camera around and you find out the guy in the woods is ian.

in the end of the books story, we find out that ali has a twin sister named courtney but she has mental problems. when courtney was switching hospitals, she stayed home for a little while. courtney loved to pretend to be ali. one day, she took it pretty far by taking alis ring, which made her family belive that courtney was actually ali. they sent ali back to the new institution instead of courtney. courtney dumped alis old friends because she knew she wouldnt be able to pull it off considering the fact that she knew nothing about them. so, she befriended spencer aria emily and hanna. then, ali came back from the institution and the night that emily hanna spencer and aria had a sleepover during the first episode and killed courtney and supposively burried her alive because she was mad. police soon found courneys body ofcoarse thinking it was alis, so everyone thought ali was murdered. we then find out that ali became A after mona or she might have worked with mona, only being A half the time. ali was able to become A when she found courtneys diary where she wrote all of the girls secrets down. some people say that the series will have a completely different ending, some say it will be the same and some say it may only be slightly different but i cant wait to find out!

Its is currently not known. Both the books and the series have very different events they are completely different in some cases. But Pretty Little Liers will end somewhere in 2013
