AnswerMany artists have recorded this song, but the most famous is Judy Garland. She sang it in the movie The Wizard of OZ AnswerMany individuals have recorded that song, however I believe Judy Garland was either the first one, or at least made the song popular, in "The Wizard of Oz."

Another wonderful version is by the Hawaiian Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwo'ole. It's just him and a ukelele. Beautiful.

Robbins Music Corporation holds the rights on behalf of MGM, clearances etc. can be gained through the link below. To clear up one persistent thought about "Over the Rainbow" being public domain--the law says, if we take the 1939 creation date, the copyright lasts for 95 years from that date, 2034 is the release date. Robbins filed their copyright on behalf of MGM in 1979, so if we take the post-1978 copyright law, then the soonest this would be available would be 70 years after the death of the last author/composer (which was Harold Arlen in 1986) means 2056 would be the public domain release date.
