What an interesting question. This is a question that can yield millions of different answers, it all depends on how you look at it. According to Music: In Theory and Practice by Bruce Benward, "Music is an art of sound and time, and the basic characteristics of musical tone - pitch, duration, intensity, and timbre - are the fundamental elements." Others will use a more scientific, or objective, approach and describe it as various wavelengths of sound that come together to aurally pleasing, or pleasing to the ear. You could go so far in depth you could write a novel. I hope this helps, feel free to email me if you would like more information.

Happy Playing!
