There were a number of occult dramas in the late thirties ( after phase of Depression) and oddly even into the World War II period. Few dealt with service-related separation angst or ghosts, with some exceptions. a powerful Radio drama called the Shadow of the Wings has the angel of Death stalking a young girl in a hospital and mixes supernatural and realistic angles of presentation- it is not a movie but a radio drama but is a good prototype of that genre- Shadows of the Wings do not belong to one Adam West! ( actor who played Batman) pun intended.

Closest thing might be the Ghost and Mrs. Muir. IN the film and the Tv version the Ghostly character is not evil. He is an old-time sea captain reincarnated- and the TV version , played by Edward Mulhare obvously resembled Melville. It was not directly stated in the TV show that Mrs. Muir was a widow, she could have been a divorcee. Ghost was a good spirited character, literally!
