The song was inspired by her having imagined what Mary Magdalene may have felt when Jesus died. Katie had met Michael Baigent, the author of "Holy Blood, Holy Grail", who explained to her his theory about the two historic figures having had an intimate relationship. Without necessarily taking his theory literally to heart, she allowed herself to feel what Mary would have felt, and the waves of emotion Katie felt inspired her to write the song, sometimes referred to as "Mary's Song". She has said many people find it applicable to their personal experiences, and she is clear she did not intend it to be "about" this controversial idea, only inspired by the feelings that came from it. While similar, the ideas behind "The DaVinci Code" were not part of her songwriting process.
