• Kakashi refers to Haku as a boy several times.

Because of his kekhai genkai. In other words he has a weird girl-looking family. The thought just creeps me out. Haku wears a mask because Zabuza doesn't like his girly face. That's why haku was cast out of his clan he looks to much like a girl.

My prediction is that Haku was originally a girl (for some of those reasons above...) but the creators of Naruto thought that people might get suggestive if they had the guy, Zabuza, and the chick, Haku, working together.
