Well, Curly and Moe were brothers and Larry was a friend. I'm not sure how shimp and curly joe all played in, but I know that about Moe, Larry and Curly because my mom is such a huge fan of the Stooges!
There was no Joe in the three stooges. They were Moe, Larry and Shemp/Curly
Yes. Moe (Moses Horwitz), Curly (Jerome Horwitz), and Shemp (Samuel Horwitz) were brothers and all were born in Brooklyn, New York. Shemp was the oldest (born in 1895), Curly the youngest (born in 1903), and Moe in the middle (born in 1897). There were two other older brothers that very little is known about.
The Three Stooges originally consisted of Moe , Larry and Shemp . Curly was a replacement for Shemp who went on to have a career in Hollywood independent of the comedy trio . Shemp returned to take the place of Curly who had suffered a stroke . The fourth Stooge was Curly since he had replaced Shemp but then in turn was subsequently replaced by Shemp who was one of the original members of The Three Stooges . Shemp died of a heart-attack and was replaced by Joe Besser who needed to care for an ailing wife and was , in turn , replaced by Joe DeRita . Christine McIntyre (16 April 1911 - 8 July 1984) is sometimes referred to as the fourth stooge .
Jerome "Curly" Horowitz was the youngest born in 1903, Larry Fienstien, 1902, and "Moe" Horowitz 1897. But the part of The third stooge was first played by his older brother "Shemp" Horowitz for a few years.
The Stooges were commonly known by their first names: "Larry, Moe, and Curly" and "Moe, Larry, and Shemp," among other lineups. The act originally featured Moe Howard (born Harry [Moshe] Moses Horwitz in 1897), brother Shemp Howard (born [Shmuel] Samuel Horwitz), and longtime friend Larry Fine (born Louis [Levi] Feinberg). Shemp was later replaced by brother Curly Howard (born Jerome Lester [Yehudah-Leib] Horwitz October 22, 1903). When Curly suffered a debilitating stroke in 1946, Shemp rejoined the act.
There were only three stooges at a time, but six of them altogether. 1) Moe Howard (Moses Horwitz) 2) Larry Fine (Louis Fienberg) 3) Shemp Howard (Samuel Horwitz) 4) Curly Howard (Jerome Horwitz) 5) Joe Besser 6) Joe [Curley Joe] DiRita
