MGM
I have never heard of this. Perhaps you mean LEO the Lion of MGM fame. The above answer is "partly" correct. There were really five different lions used by MGM over the years. The first was originally named "Slats" and was born in the Zoo in Dublin Ireland in 1919. He was brought to Hollywood and trained to growl on cue by the animal trainer named Volney Phifer. Slats was taken on tour at various times under the name "Leo", by MGM to promote films. Slats was later sold to the Zoo in Memphis, Tennesee where he was renamed "Volney" in honor of his trainer. The lion died in Mmephis in 1944. There were four other lions used for later MGM films Logos.
