This is a question that is surrounded by debate.

On one hand, some people believe that a work of art can mean anything, and that its meaning is never constant. The work of art's meaning lies within the beholder, so essentially there are infinite meanings.

However, on the other side, people believe that there is a singular inherent meaning that the artist laces within the work. That, the single meaning is what the artist makes it.

personally, I think it's the later.
