TV MA is a television rating saying that the content is not suitable for persons under the age of 17. Rated R is a movie rating saying, the same thing, that the content is not suitable for persons under the age of 17. Honestly, both ratings mean the same thing, but are used in a different setting -- one for television and one for theater. However, since many television producers know that not every child is monitored by his parents, I'd say rated R is worse because a person under the age of 17 cannot purchase a ticket without an adult over the age of 21. In conclusion, both ratings mean the same thing but each used in a different setting.

The above is not entirely true. When it comes to certain programming particularly on pay TV, such as HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax, MA basically functions as an X or NC-17 rating in Cinema would. Since MA has the potential to reach NC-17 levels, MA is likely a more severe rating, because it means that while it can have the same things as R films might, it can have them to whatever level they want, because MA is the highest rating on TV.
Ma means mature audiences, so it would be like an R rating, and PG 13 is not as bad as an R rating, so TV MA would be worse

The closest analog is between TV-MA and PG-13TV MA is a TV rating meaning "For Mature Audiences Only".R is an MPAA rating meaning "Restricted - under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian"Officially TV MA means:"This program is specifically designed to be viewed by adults and therefore may be unsuitable for children under 17. This program may contain one or more of the following: crude indecent language (L), explicit sexual activity (S), or graphic violence (V)."Officially R is assigned for:Violence that is both intense and persistent (at least an R rating although NC-17 could, in theory be assigned if it were intense and persistent enough) The most violent R rated films are more violent than the most violent TV-MA programsMultiple occurrences of one of the harsher sexually-derived expletives and/or he usage of such an expletive in a sexual context. The most vulgar and crude language in R rated films will exceed that permitted in TV-MA.Anything more than "brief" nudity and nudity that is sexually oriented. Nothing more than brief nudity is allowed in TV-MA
Spaceballs is rated PG on DVD and when it premiered in the theater. However, because ratings and things have changed over the years, this movie maybe would've gotten a PG-13 or even R rating due to the language. It is rated TV-MA on television.
