Yes, they ARE distantly related - according to more than one web site (Jewish journal, Jew or Not Jew, and supposedly Wikipedia too). Julia's father and Richard Dreyfuss are both Ashkenazim. All Ashkenazim are at least 30th cousins.

As to the different spellings, that matters not. People can very closely related (first cousins) and have different spellings (and pronunciations) of the last names. The "Dreyfus" with one "s" is more of a French spelling.
