It is much the same as dogs and cats. There is not much more reason then genetics. Vampires and Werewolves hate each other. It is first introduced in the 2nd book, New Moon, that even just the actual smell of the foe is terrible to the beholder. Edward and Jacob specifically hate each other because, both Edward and Jacob believe they are in love with Bella. The matter isn't helped by their complete opposites of Edwards over protective nature and Jacob's adventurous nature. There is many more reasons for the hatred between Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black, but, to keep my answer relatively short: I will end with this. Not really. Jacob and Edward aren't at each others throats as much anymore at the end of the book though. They learn to live with each other for Bella's sake.

No. Bella loves Jacob but she loves Edward more. Eventually Jacob falls in love with Bella's daughter so he doesn't want her anymore anyway.
