Jacob Black is not a werewolf nor a wolf. He is a shape-shifter. Back in the day, even before Ephraim Black lived, a town where the Quileute tribe lived with their Chief was attacked by vampires. As the Chief was replaced by a lying maniac who only wanted to control the Quileute tribe, he ran away. He went to live in the woods, and was killed by one of the new Chief's "minions." The then dead Chief was a poor, sad soul who went lurking around the forest hoping somehow he could get revenge over this evil new Chief. He found a wolf who was willing to give up some space in his body for a soul and let the Chief enter. The Chief went back to the town and killed the horrible new Chief and took over his body. All this is explained in the third book in the Twilight-series - Eclipse.
