Gwen is an Anodite, which is a being that can use their powers to do things with Manna or life energy. In the old Ben 10, she and Charmcaster switch bodies. Charmcaster mentions that making the potion was easy because Gwen has a semimagical aura. Gwen then steals Charcasyer's spellbook and since then she still has the same spellbook. So basically she harrnessed life energy (Manna) and used it to perform magic.
