in "Where the lilies bloom" Kiser Pease is the greedy landlord who lives with much and is not copassionate or charitable. I think an apt comparison is the Banks in Steinbecks "East of Eden". Not only is he not compassionate he has no sense of community only in his own gain. For years he has taken all the Roy Luther has in the form of income from share cropping while never making improvements that do not benefit him. Thus leaving the family not only in poverty but abject poverty with little recourse. The marriage of Devola represents another acquisition. The acquisition of Devola would give further control over Roy Luther and his family and represents the taking of even more of Roy Luthers labors.
