In the first four books the person who is sending the text messages is.........Mona Vanderwal. Hard to believe but it's true, she plays along pretending to be Hanna's freind when she is really collecting information. Mona dies in the fourth book as well, and in the rest of the books a new -A comes along. The new A is Alison DiLaurentis (the real Ali). Ali had a twin sister named Courtney. Courtney was mentally ill and likes to pretend that she is Ali. One day Ali and Courtney's parents accidentally send Ali to a mental hospital thinking she was Courtney. Courtney pretended to be Ali and befriended the Pretty Little Liars (Aria Montgomery, Spencer Hastings, Hanna Marin, and Emily Fields). The Liars never knew the real Ali, just Courtney pretending to be Ali. The night "Ali" (Courtney) goes missing, the real Ali snuck out of the mental hospital and killed Courtney. So... the real Ali is not dead and she is the new A, plus she framed Ian Thomas for killing "Ali" (Courtney).

When Mona dies while trying to kill Spencer, Ali, who has been in a mental institute posing as her secret sister Courtney who lied and tricked her parents into believing she was Ali, comes back and becomes the second and last "A". So the girls never actually knew Ali, they knew Courtney.
